How can I stop getting sore knees when I jog?

Lost 28 kilos walking the dog last year and have been trying to add jogging (C25K) into the mix but my knees get sore so I have to go back to walking. Never had knee problems before I started loosing the weight.

Knee problem's are the most common injury amongst runners. I highly recommend that you seek professional advise from a reputable physio.

Working on strengthening the musculature of the legs will help with greater stability and support.

Start with shorter distances and see how your knees feel the following day, gradually increase the distance.

Have you considered that it might be caused by impact shock vibrating up your legs as you exercise? You mention that it only happened after you started losing weight. I'm assuming that your weight loss efforts included increased exercise so this may well be a factor.

If you think this may be a cause, try placing shock absorbent inserts in your runners. You can get them from your local pharmacy. You can get partial (arch only or arch and heel) or full inserts. They usually have them in gel and sometimes sorbothane. If you experience heel or arch pain also then you probably need the orthotic insert.

Another alternative is to try wearing a pair of good quality runners with good shock absorption. You can go to Athletes foot and get your 'fit print' and they will suggest specific shoes to suit your needs. You will usually find that brands like Nike, Reebok, Brooks etc are the best. While they cost three times as much as cheap runners they generally last at least three times as long
