Can your mental focus/strength over-ride your body strength?

I want to complete the City 2 Surf but I've never done a run like that before. I have always been a runner, but only about 8k's at my best before trying any longer. I think with preparation I could do 14k's but I need help with my mental training. Do you believe that when in the right frame of mind the brain can over-ride your tiredness and push you through in a situation like that?

Okay, there are a few issues here:

1. There’s a big difference between working through some physical discomfort during a run and ignoring warning signs of impending injury or medical issue – you need to differentiate between the two.
2. I’ve trained seventy year-olds to run marathons so (barring medical issues) I’m pretty sure you could prepare and complete the City 2 Surf.
3. Don’t be scared of getting uncomfortable or challenging yourself – it where the growth, the improvement, the learning, the adaptation and the transformation takes place.
4. Enjoy the experience and don’t over-think the process. Don’t let your mind get in the way of your body’s potential.
