I'm a Coeliac who needs to lose weight...

I found out I had Coeliac Disease several years ago at 25. After years of being underweight I find myself now at 74kg. I'm a female, 32 and approximately 167cm. My activity levels haven't changed at all; in fact I now go to the gym 3 times a week. Is gluten free food more fattening? I can't seem to shift any weight despite eating a healthy diet.

Your BMI is just over 26, which puts you just in the overweight range and, after years of being underweight, you are justified in feeling surprised to find yourself there. What may have contributed to this is that the years of malabsorption will have taught your appetite to try and get you to eat as much as possible. Your body was trying to stop you from being underweight. The good news though is that the lining of your gut must now be healing well and you are now able to digest and absorb your food again. To get to and stay in the healthy weight you may now find that you do need to learn about the Calorie content of foods and drinks. Get yourself a Calorie counter book and start keeping a food diary and you will quick learn just how many calories you need to get back to a healthy weight.

These days there are so many tasty gluten free foods around and their Calorie values are just as high as the versions that do contain gluten. It can be easy to feel so relieved to find gluten free products that you end up eating more of them than you intend to. A food diary will really help you to estimate how many Calories you’re consuming. It would also be useful to look at the website of Dr Sue Shepherd, an Accredited Practising Dietitian who has Coeliac disease herself, www.shepherdworks.com.au and she has a range of fabulous gluten free cookbooks with healthy recipes to help your body get back its balance.
